Fort Nonsense Historical Park

Fort Nonsense is located at the gateway to Mathews County along Rt. 14. This 4 acre parcel of land was purchased by the Mathews County Historical Society to ensure the preservation of the County’s most extensive array of Civil War fortifications. The fort stands today primarily as a meaningful symbol of Mathews County’s Civil War experience. Gallant soldiers of the 26th Infantry, outstanding commanders like Brigadier General James Henry Lane, daring blockade runners, and home front heroes, such as Sally Tompkins, made Mathews County’s contributions to the Confederacy far exceed the county’s diminutive size. Desperate efforts to produce salt, destructive Federal raids, and the sad death of Sands Smith all combine to make Mathews County’s Civil War history a compelling story to tell. Read More >>
